Lover of teaching and family, Larry Gunn Williams, 78, died Saturday, March 29 at Ebeid Hospice from complications of Parkinson’s pneumonia. Larry was born in Toledo on December 29,1946 to Richard “Dick” Williams and Helen Gunn Williams Miller. A lifelong Toledoan, Larry was a graduate of DeVilbiss High School, Class of 1964 where he tried to avoid being seen by schoolmates as he was dropped off by his mother who was a counselor there. Larry then attended his beloved University of Michigan where he earned a bachelor’s degree in meteorological engineering followed by a master’s degree in educational technology from the University of Toledo. Larry has had the same two seats in The Big House for more than fifty years. A lover of math and science, Larry taught both subjects; first at Jones Jr. High, downtown, and then at Rogers High School. Larry was quick to offer a spontaneous lecture on, well, any subject but especially science. His wife threatened over the years to buy him a soap box. Larry met his great love, Tamar Conley Williams, when he rang her apartment doorbell after being set up on a blind date in November 1986. They were married the following October and enjoyed thirty-seven years of humor, love and fun. Strong and kind are two words that describe him best. A career in marketing communications came after teaching where many lifelong friends were made. But many times he exclaimed that being a dad was the greatest job of his life. Especially being the swim dad of tadpoles, collegiate swimmers, and coaches.
Larry is survived by his wife, Tami, daughters Hollis Marjory Williams, Linden Gunn (Warren) Tracey and granddaughter, Lennon “Lenny” Gunn Tracey. His beloved sister, Carol (Tony) Feiock grieves from Kansas City as do the families of their children Drs. David (Sarah Gladstone) Feiock of Kansas City and Jenny (Joe) Higgins of Chicago.
Opportunities to celebrate Larry’s life include a visitation from 10-noon on Saturday, May 10 with the memorial service at noon, followed by a luncheon. These events will be held at Sylvania United Church of Christ, 7240 Erie Street in Sylvania, Ohio where Larry’s family has belonged for thirty-five years.
