Larry A. Spencer, 79, of Oregon, Ohio, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Thursday, April 23, 2026, in Toledo, Ohio. Larry was born on March 12, 1947, in Fremont, Ohio, to Emery and Agnes (Schafer) Spencer. He was raised in rural Elmore, Ohio, and graduated from Harris-Elmore High School in 1965. Larry served as drum major of the marching band for three years and received the John Philip Sousa Award as an outstanding musician his senior year; an early reflection of his lifelong passion for music.
A dedicated musician, Larry played both the bassoon and saxophone. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he performed as a bassoonist with the U.S. Army Field Band. Larry pursued his love of learning at Bowling Green State University, where he earned bachelor's and master's degrees in education. He went on to work for 31 years at the GM Powertrain Toledo Plant. Music remained an important part of Larry's life. He was an active member of the Genoa American Legion Band and performed for several years with the Owens Community College Band. Larry was a longtime member of Lemoyne Baptist Church, where he cherished the many friendships and was grateful for the purpose and direction his faith brought to his life.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Richard, Norman, Alvin, and Dwight. He is survived by his longtime companion, Kaye Boss; dear friend, Dr. Ron Shinkle; along with many loving family members and friends.
Larry will be laid to rest in a private graveside ceremony for close family and friends at Clay Township Cemetery.
