Dr. Krishna Prasad Rai passed away Friday, November 16, 2018, at the University of Michigan Medical Center at the age of 59. He was born on February 23, 1959, in Padubidri, a small town in the Indian state of Karnataka and was the son of Dr. Prakash Chandra and Mrs. Sumathi Rai. He grew up watching his father tend to patients in their local community and eventually followed in his footsteps, shadowing him and treating all who needed help. Dr. Rai would go on to attend M.R. Medical College and shortly after getting married, he moved to Toledo, where he would begin his residency at Mercy Hospital. Upon completion, he would join Elmore Medical Associates, where he had been since 1996. This choice was easy for him as the small, tight-knit community of Elmore reminded him of the area where he grew up. Dr. Rai’s first passion, above all else, was caring for others. He loved what he did for a living and would spend countless hours seeing extra patients if need be, even making house visits when necessary. He had a big heart and was someone who never met a stranger. When he was not seeing patients and making rounds at the hospital, Krishna found comfort in the company of those close to him. Whether it was watching the game with his son, playing games with his daughter, going to the casino with his beloved mother-in-law, Kusum, or lovingly teasing his wife, Dr. Rai could always be found with a smile on his face. He will be remembered for his calming presence and gentle demeanor. Surviving are his mother, his wife, Kiran, and his children, Samin and Ahalya. He is also survived by his brothers, Ram Rathan (Sneha) Rai and Gowrish Rai, his sisters, Rekha (Bhaskar) Shetty and Veena (Aravind) Shetty, and his loving nieces and nephews. Services will be at 5 p.m. Sunday, November 18 in the Walker Funeral Home in Sylvania Twp., where visitation will begin at 2 pm. The family suggests tributes to the Mercy Foundation or Ronald McDonald House of Northwest Ohio.
