Katherine Elaine Myers

Katherine E. “Kathie” Myers, 68, of Sylvania, Ohio, passed away on November 29, 2017 at Heartland at ProMedica, surrounded by family. She was born on December 17, 1948 in Defiance, Ohio, to Raymond and Barbara (Rule) Zuercher. Kathie graduated from Start High School in 1966, as part of the first four-year class at the school. She then attended The University of Toledo and graduated with honors in 1970. While at the University, Kathie was an active member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority, serving as president during her senior year. She also served as Editor-in-Chief of the University yearbook Blockhouse during her senior year, and was president of the honorary society Peppers (now Mortar Board). She was inducted into the Start High School Hall of Fame in 2017. In 1970, Kathie began a 42-year career as a teacher in Sylvania Schools, where she taught Spanish at Arbor Hills Junior High School (1970 - 1984) and Southview High School (1984 - 2012). At Arbor Hills, she met her future husband, Joseph “Joe” Myers, a fellow faculty member. During her long career at Southview, Kathie spent over 20 years as the department chair for foreign languages, and also worked with student leaders as the faculty sponsor for Student Senate. She retired from Sylvania Schools in 2012. A passionate teacher and learner, Kathie became a museum docent at the Toledo Museum of Art in 2014, where she worked with school groups and conducted tours for the museum. Kathie’s greatest joy in life was spending time with her family and close friends. She loved traveling with Joe on European tours, and seeing her children and grandchildren out of state. As an active member at St. Michael’s in the Hills Episcopal Church for nearly 10 years, Kathie was a regular member of the choir, along with her husband. Kathie is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Joseph Myers; children, Thomas (Tamara) Myers, Atlanta, Ga., Rebecca (Michael) Koike, Scarsdale, N.Y., and Matthew (Wendy) Myers; grandchildren, Caroline and Lauren and Ashley, Jake and Maddie; brother, Ken (Lynn) Zuercher; sisters, Peggy (David) Hinds and Sarah (David) Rockwell; sister-in-law Terri (Jim) Smith; and eight nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Barbara. Kathie will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by her many lifelong friends, and her many former students from her long career. Visitation will take place at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Avenue on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 from 2 until 8 p.m. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Michael’s in the Hills Episcopal Church, 4718 Brittany Rd., Toledo, OH 43615. Visitation in the church will begin at 10 a.m. Interment of the Ashes will immediately follow in St. Michaels Cemetery.
