Katherine Elizabeth (Palmer) Genzman, known by friends as Kathy, age 82, passed away peacefully at Hospice of Northwest Ohio on Monday, May 6 after a remarkable 4 year battle with cancer. Kathy was born on May 28, 1941 in Toledo, Ohio to her parents Mildred (Doyle) and Francis Palmer. She graduated from Central Catholic High School, Mary Manse College, and the University of Toledo.
She was a dedicated art teacher in Toledo Public Schools for 34 years, enjoying her time at Jones JH, Waite HS, DeVilbiss HS, and Bowsher HS until her retirement in 1997. As a teacher she taught multiple areas and levels of Art. Her students’ artwork received awards in multiple shows ranging from local to national levels. She loved the subject she taught and loved her students more. Kathy was a lifetime member of TFT, playing an important role in the union for many years. Even while working full time, Kathy was a prolific artist, focusing mostly on watercolors of Toledo landmarks. She participated in the University of Toledo’s Art on the Mall for 26 years and was a member of the Athena Art Society and The Toledo Artist’s Club.
She was most proud that all of her children went into public service, believing that giving back to the community was as important as it was to her.
Kathy was a life-long parishioner at The Most Blessed Sacrament Church, receiving every sacrament there.
Survivors include children Paul (Lianne), Gretchen (Pete) Paskiet, and Peter (Sarah). Grandchildren Henry, Jack, Sophie, Finn, Eva, Leif, Michael and Grace Katherine. Brothers Mike (Karen) Palmer, Patrick (Terri) Palmer, and sister Peg (Jim) O’Hearn and all of her “favorite” nieces and nephews. In addition, Kathy was blessed with too many friends to count who were like family.
Kathy was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, her parents, and sisters Theresa and Mary Frances.
Kathy’s children would like to thank the doctors and nurses of the Toledo Clinic Oncology and Infusion, particularly Dr. Timothy Kasunic, for treating her like family. She actually enjoyed receiving treatment so she could see them.
Visitation will take place from 2 - 8 pm on Thursday, May 9 at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. Funeral Service will be held at The Most Blessed Sacrament Church at 11 am on Friday, May 10, 2024.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice of Northwest Ohio who took wonderful care of Kathy and her family in her final days, or The East Toledo Family Center, always close to Kathy’s heart.
