Karl Robert Junkins, 81, of Maumee, died Wednesday, January 28, 2009 while in the loving care of Hospice of Northwest Ohio and the staff of Ridgewood Manor. He was born in Custar, Ohio to Thomas and Katherine Hammes Junkins on February 9, 1927. In April, 1945, he was drafted into the army and served two years in the occupation of Japan. In 1947 he hired onto the New York Central Railroad in the engine department and ended his 40 years of service with Conrail. On November 5, 1949, he married Joanne Carolyn Haas, his wife of 59 years, who survives. Besides his parents, Karl was preceded in death by his sisters, Wetha Kiefer, Mildred Hertzfeld and Marilyn Homier and brother, Richard. Also surviving are daughters, Mary Beth Don Gratop, Jeanne Horne, Nancy Mike Daniels and Karla Staton; sons, Brian, John Kathy, Paul Edie and Andrew Patty Junkins; 18 grandchildren, 2 great-grandsons and brother, Charles Junkins. Karl was a member of the Adams Township American Legion Post No. 553 and Maumee Elks. He was a charter member of the Maumee Senior Center and the national Junkins Family Association, both of which were important in his senior years through friendships formed. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. Jeffrey Maludy, cardiologist, and staff for their wonderful and cheerful care during most of the 31 years of his heart disease. Karl was one of the doctors exemplary patients. Family and friends may visit Monday 2-8 p.m. in the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home and Crematory, 501 Conant Street, Maumee where a Scripture Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will begin Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. in the funeral home followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Charles Borromeo Church. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Maumee Senior Center, American Heart Association or St. Charles Borromeo Church. www.walkerfuneralhomes.com
