June 5, 1957 — July 12, 2007

LOCKWOODKaren S. BornKaren S. Lockwood, 50, of Britton, MI, passed away at home on July 12, 2007, after a long battle with breast cancer. She confronted her final journey with the same courage of spirit, tenacity, and strength with which she lived her life. Karen was one of those very rare people who formed immediate and genuine friendships. Those who were privileged to be her friends have experienced friendship at its best.Born June 5, 1957, in Toledo, Ohio, Karen was the daughter of Ronald and Patricia Nowak Born. She was a graduate of Devilbiss High School and received her Bachelors Degree from The University of Toledo and her Masters Degree from Spring Arbor College. Karen married Stephen Lockwood on September 16, 1977, and he survives. Karen was a wonderful mother to her two daughters who were always in her thoughts. She was a devoted Grammie to her precious granddaughter, Avery Jolynn, and spent countless hours with her reading, taking nature walks looking for bugs, inspecting rocks, and smelling flowers. They loved spending time together playing pretend.Karen worked for Bedford Public Schools at both Smith Road and Monroe Road Elementary Schools. She was an exceptional educator whose commitment and excellence were unsurpassed. Karen was honored as the Educator of the Year for 2007 at Monroe Road Elementary. Karens passion was evident in her relationships with colleagues, students and parents. She was adored by her young charges.Karen was an ardent advocate for the unification of all Bedford educators. She served as an Association Representative at the building level and as a negotiator at the table. After long days or nights negotiating on behalf of her colleagues, Karen would drive home and make cookies for a class celebration the next day. Her dedication, humor, and inquiring mind have been keenly missed. Her courage during this final ordeal personified perfectly the essence of Karen.Karen was blessed to have the greatest support group of friends and staff at Monroe Road. They are all wonderful and the family will never forget the unending support and compassion they had for Karen. A special thanks to Susie, Karens lifelong friend and sister:, for all her concern and the comfort she gave Karen. Thanks to the Haematology-Oncology Associates of Ohio and Michigan for their compassionate care.In addition to her loving husband, Stephen, Karen is survived by her mother; her daughters, Leslie granddaughter, Little Miss Avery and Stephanie fianc
