Karen S. Kruse, affectionately known as “Nane” by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, passed away peacefully on November 23, 2025, in the compassionate care of Genoa Care Center & Retirement Village. Born on April 5, 1941, in Fremont, Ohio, she was the daughter of Samuel Perry and Dorthy (Easton) Root. Karen grew up in the Green Springs area and graduated from Thompson High School.
Karen married the love of her life, Keith R. Kruse, in Green Springs. They shared many wonderful years together until his passing in 2008. A dedicated homemaker and steadfast volunteer, Karen poured her energy and heart into caring for others. She delighted in traveling throughout the United States and cherished holiday traditions, especially gathering the whole family for the annual making of popcorn balls. Creative and hands-on, she once enjoyed making ceramic art while raising her children.
Family adventures often took place on the waters of Lake Erie, where she and Keith spent memorable days boating and fishing with their children. She sang with the Swiss Singers and shared her voice in worship as a longtime member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Genoa. She was also a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Among her proudest achievements was her work with the volunteer group that helped secure grants to save the Genoa Town Hall, a project that exemplified her love for the community she called home.
Karen is survived by her children, Jeffrey (Kim) Kruse, Mark (Lorie) Kruse, Deborah (John) Harmeyer, and Donna (Bill) Nelson; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Keith; her brothers, Stanley and Eben Root; her sister, Patricia Brundage; her parents; and her cherished dog, Dolly.
Family and friends are invited to gather on Monday, December 1, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Robinson-Walker Funeral Home, 501 West Street, Genoa, Ohio. A funeral ceremony will follow at 12:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Karen will be laid to rest at Clay Township Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in Karen’s honor may be made to St. John’s United Church of Christ – Genoa.
