Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Mrs. Popper was a resident of Toledo and Sylvania for most of her adult life. When her husband TenBroeck S. Day, with whom she had two children, died at the age of 42, Mrs. Popper entered the University of Toledo, where she was inducted into the Kappa Delta Pi education honor society and from which she graduated magna cum laude. Thereafter, she taught fourth grade at Monac School and later became a reading specialist in the Sylvania school system. She was a master teacher and a Teacher of the Year. After her retirement, Mrs. Popper continued to golf with friends, traveled nationally and internationally with her second husband, and enjoyed volunteering at the Toledo Museum of Art and with the Sunset Auxiliary. She participated in AAUW study groups and in book clubs with friends. She often visited her children and their families and very much loved her three grandchildren, Alden Walker, Kevin Day, and Lauren Day. Mrs. Poppers son John Day and daughter-in-law Cindy Finley Day, of San Luis Obispo, California, and daughter Suzanne Walker and son-in-law Kent Walker, of Towson, Maryland, wish to extend particular thanks to Mrs. Poppers niece Peggy Brown and her husband Mike, of Valparaiso, Indiana, for their cheerful, caring, and thoughtful engagement in Mrs. Poppers life over many, many years. In addition, Mrs. Poppers family thanks the staff of Sunset House as well as her private caregivers, all of whom have provided for her comfort and well-being over the past four years. Betty Bode, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, steadfastly maintained her great friendship with Mrs. Popper begun when the two were leaders of their daughters Girl Scout troop so long ago via mail and telephone through Mrs. Poppers final years. The family appreciates her generosity and caring. A memorial will be held for Mrs. Popper at Sunset House on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 1:00pm. Burial will be private. The family requests that in lieu of any flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Residents Assistance Fund at Sunset House.
