Judith Gottschling died in faith at Elizabeth Scott Nursing Home on Saturday, August 28, 2021. She was diagnosed in 2009 at Mayo Clinic with a form of Alzheimer’s and after a long struggle, the disease ended her life. Judy was born in St. Louis, Mo in 1943 to Wendell and Marjorie Holt. She grew up in Bexley, Ohio and graduated from Capital University in 1965. In December 1966 she married Ray Gottschling, then a senior at Trinity Lutheran Seminary, and they shared 54 years of marriage. They had two children: David Huffman-Gottschling (Kristen), Chicago, Illinois, and Beth Huber (George), Washington, DC. After the children were in school full time, Judy went back to college and earned another degree in computer science at Bowling Green State University. She enjoyed a fulfilling and fruitful career working at Toledo Edison, Libby Owens Ford and retiring from Sauder Woodworking in 2006. The joys of her life were her children and grandchildren; Grace Huffman-Gottschling and Simon Huffman-Gottschling of Chicago and Henry Huber of Washington DC. Judy found delight in traveling with Ray all over the country and world, summer vacations with the whole family at the Outer Banks, yearly trips to Stratford, Ontario, enjoying good theater, playing Bridge, reading and being part of a book club for over 25 years. She was a volunteer with Read for Literacy and Hospice of Defiance County. She was preceded in death by her father Wendell Holt, her step father, Carl Elving, her mother Marjorie Elving, and brother-in-law Pat Sadler. She is survived by her husband and children and their families, sister, Cathy Sadler, Flat Rock, North Carolina, sister-in-law Gail Morgan (Brock), Clark Lakes, Ohio, nephews Andy Sadler (Maggie) Atlanta, Johnathan Morgan (Valerie) Baltimore, niece Kerrie McBride (Matt) Baltimore and a number of cousins. Ray and Judy were charter Members of Community of Christ Lutheran Church in Whitehouse for 25 years where Ray was the founding pastor. After retirement they joined Zoar Lutheran in Perrysburg. The family expresses its gratitude to the staff at Elizabeth Scott and Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their compassionate care. Memorials in Judy’s honor may be given to Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service or to Hospice of Northwest Ohio. A memorial service will take place at Zoar Lutheran Church in Perrysburg at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 2. Pastor Tim Philabaum of Zoar will officiate.
