Joy Ann Dougherty

April 8, 1941 — August 30, 2015

Joy Ann (Marohn) Dougherty, age 74, of Toledo, Ohio, was received into the arms of her loving Lord on Sunday, August 30, 2015 with her loving family at her side, after a brief battle with lung cancer. Joy was born on April 8, 1941, in Detroit, Michigan, to the Rev. and Mrs. Otto E. (Ruth) Marohn, who predeceased her. She was baptized by her father in St Marks English Evangelical Lutheran Church in Detroit and spent her childhood years in that congregation. She received a Lutheran education from grade school through college at Bethany Lutheran School, Detroit; Detroit Lutheran High School and Lutheran High School East; and Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Indiana, where she earned her B.A. in 1962. She earned her M.Ed, from the University of Toledo in 1990. Joy also was a Certified Professional Secretary and Certified Master Instructor in Microsoft Office Applications. Joy was an executive secretary/administrative assistant for ten years in Ohio and Michigan before she began teaching in the Business Technology Department at the University of Toledo in 1987. She taught administrative office technology and computer courses at UT for over 23 years until her retirement in 2010 from UTs College of Business and Innovation as a tenured associate professor. Even after retirement, Joy continued to teach part-time for three more years because she loved to teach. Joy also was part-time Legal Placement Service Administrator at the Toledo Bar Association from 1997-2004, where she placed secretaries, receptionists, and legal assistants in Toledo area law offices. Joy derived great satisfaction from serving in many professional and church organizations throughout her life. She considered service to be her calling, and she humbly and dutifully answered that calling. In the 1970s, she was president of Ohio Lutheran Church Women of the Lutheran Church in America (now ELCA). She was president of the Glass City Chapter of Professional Secretaries International (now IAAP) in the 1990s, and also treasurer of the Ohio Division of that organization for two years. She was secretary, president-elect, and president of the Ohio Business Teachers Association from 2006-2008. Joy was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Toledo, and the congregations Lutheran Womens Missionary League (LWML) society. She eventually became president of the LWML Toledo Zone and then president of the LWML Ohio District. She served the national LWML as Mission Editor of the Lutheran Womans Quarterly, and contributed articles to that publication. Most recently, she was national Recording Secretary of the LWML. Joy would want to be remembered as a woman of faith who loved her husband and family dearly, treasured her Lutheran education, and who lived a life of service to her Lord and to her profession. Cherishing her memory are her loving husband, John Joseph Dougherty; her wonderful sons, Mark (JoAnn) Kunstmann and Michael (Amanda) Kunstmann; caring stepdaughter Veronica (Jeff) Eiben; seven beautiful grandchildren: Caleb Kunstmann, Joshua Kunstmann, Alyssa Kunstmann, Owen Kunstmann, Ava Eiben, Roan Eiben, and Liam Eiben; and many family members, colleagues, classmates, and friends.
