Joseph Thomas Mangan

July 27, 1959 — September 18, 2012

Joseph Thomas Mangan, age 53, passed away from encephalitis at St. Lukes Hospital in Manhattan September 18, 2012. Joe was born to Thomas and Audrey Mangan July 27, 1959. The seventh of eight children, Joe shared fond memories of growing up in Westmoreland, graduating from Gesu Grade School and Devilbiss High School. Joe pursued his interest in art history at the University of Houston, also studying at many museums throughout the U.S. and abroad. The Toledo Museum of Art was a highlight of every visit home. After residing in St. Thomas, U.S.Virgin Islands, Joe then followed his dream of living in New York City. He made his home along the Promenade in Brooklyn Heights, enjoying a spectacular riverfront view of lower Manhattan. Visiting with Joe in New York provided an educational and cultural experience. His knowledge of the city, its history and architecture were evident as he shared his love of all things New York. Joe will be remembered for his extraordinary kindness, never missing the opportunity to wish a good day to everyone he met. Frequent telephone calls kept Joe close to family news and activities. He was especially devoted to his mother, Audrey, with whom he chatted often. The Mangan family shares our love and respect for David Gaudette, Joes partner of 20 years. We are grateful to Shawn Pierce, Mallory Curran, Dale Pollak, Brenda Vercesi and Angela Fernandez for their caring support given to David and Joe during Joes illness. He was preceded in death by his parents Audrey in 2006 and Thomas in 2010. Joseph is survived by the Gaudette Family of Nashua, New Hampshire. Also left to cherish his memory are his seven siblings: Leigh Prebe Ron Toledo, Lynne Mangan Edward Blank Philadelphia, Janet Wiza John Toledo, Patrick Mangan Julie Columbus, OH, Kim Mangan Lisa Jacobs Toledo, Michael Mangan LaurieCrown Point, IN, and Shawn Pierce John Philadelphia.
