Joseph Lucas was a religious man, a family man, a businessman, and always, a gentleman, and it is with immeasurable gratitude for his life that his family announces his passing on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 2016, at the age of 92, surrounded by the people he loved in the home that he loved in Oregon, Ohio. Born to Joseph and Anna, on January 9, 1924, he spent his childhood in the St. Stephen/Birmingham area with his brother, Elmer. Central Catholic High School, John Carroll University, and the United States Marine Corps each claimed four years and provided the backstory for a life well lived. He met and married the love of his life, Mary Hlubik, whose hand he first held in 1947, and whose hand he was still holding when he died. Cherishing his memory are his wife of 68 years, Mary, his children Patrick (Tanya), Karen (John) Tscherne, and Mary (Robert) Hertzfeld; grandson, Brian (Cathy) Tscherne, great-grandsons, Lucas Joseph (his namesake) and Logan, and many nieces and nephews. During his professional career at Doehler-Jarvis, he held executive positions including controller, division accounting manager and division director of internal auditing, retiring in 1989. He was a former member of the National Association of Accountants, Planning Executives Institute, Tax Forum of Toledo, and the Institute of Internal Auditors. He belonged to Holy Rosary Parish in East Toledo where he served on Parish Council and as Chairman of the Budget Committee. His gentle humor, strength, kindness, and wisdom were a blessing to those who loved him, those who worked with him, those who knew him. Family and friends will be received beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, November 28, at Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Parish/St. Stephen, 1880 Genesee Street, with Mass to follow at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Restlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Helping Hands of St. Louis, where (following his retirement) Joe and his buddies proudly and humbly volunteered for many years; or, to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, whose care and compassion provided comfort in his final weeks.
