Local contractor and retired Lt. Colonel Joseph G. Gill age 91 of Sylvania Township passed away at home February 10, 2016 surrounded by his family. He was born August 15, 1924 in Toledo to Harley and Irene (Kelly) Gill. He attended Blessed Sacrament Grade School and graduated from DeVilbiss High School. He furthered his education at the University of Toledo, College of Engineering. Joseph served his country as a member of the Army Air Force during WWII. He continued to serve his country as a pilot in the Air Force Reserve and the Ohio Air National Guard, retiring after 25 years with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. On September 6, 1947, he married the love of his life Elizabeth E. Aberl with whom he raised 8 children. Joe was blessed with an identical twin brother John, with whom he was inseparable. They partnered in numerous businesses together including Gill Asphalt and Cement Company, American Asphalt and Centennial Excavating. Joseph held several patents in the construction industry and was Past President of Ohio Contractors Association and Flexible Pavement. A lifetime member of Little Flower Church, he was a 4th degree Knights of Columbus and a member of the Elks. His hobbies included golf, tennis, flying his 3 personal airplanes and for giggles and laughs, he captained a 38 foot Egg Harbor boat. Joe was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth Betty Gill; parents; twin brother John; brother Bill; son Joseph Gill, Jr.; grandson Patrick Gill; and daughter-in-law Kathy Gill. He is survived by sons Colin (Sandy), Kevin (Marge) and Christopher (Mary) Gill; daughters Pamela (Mike) Zbierajewski, Patricia (David) Cousino, Victoria (Rod) Doty and Laurie (John) Adams; 29 grandchildren; and 40 great-grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Walker Funeral Home 5155 Sylvania (west of Corey) on Friday from 2-8 PM where funeral services will begin Saturday at 10:15 AM followed by the Mass of the Resurrection at 11 AM in Little Flower Church, 5522 Dorr St. Toledo. Interment to follow in Calvary Cemetery. A Scripture Service will be held Friday evening at 7 PM in the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society.
