Johnny Ray Spence, 88, of Toledo, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 1, 2022. He was born in Pardee, VA to Everette and Maxi (Watts) Spence on September 8, 1933. Johnny was a humble caring man with an incredible internal strength and fortitude that was often overlooked, due to his boyish grin and gentle laugh. Johnny was of the Apostolic faith, enjoyed his daily Bible reading and his personal walk with God. He set a beautiful example for those who knew and loved him.
Johnny served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked for over 30 years for General Motors at Toledo Powertrain, retiring in 1998. Johnny enjoyed talking about old cars, traveling and visiting arboretums and flower gardens. In his travels, Johnny preferred to travel by car so he could “get the full effect” of the road trip. His belief was, “it’s not the destination, it’s the journey”.
He is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Betty Spence; children, Bonita Thames and Johnny R. Spence, Jr.; stepchildren, Michael (Cindy) Daum, Mark Daum; and many grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Louise Matney.
Per Johnny’s wishes, there will be no services held. The family was assisted by Walker Funeral Home, Toledo, OH.
