John Edward Van Nest

January 21, 1943 — October 6, 2014

No more pain or sadness, our faithful husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away October 6, 2014 at home, and is now resting peacefully in the loving arms of our Lord. John was born January 21, 1943 to Edward and Jean (Shay) Van Nest in Toledo, Ohio. A graduate of DeVilbiss High School, John served his country proudly in the US Air Force as an Aviation Mechanic. Upon his discharge in 1968, he returned to Toledo where his career as an Air Conditioning and Heating specialist began. He first worked at Williams and Co. where he met his wife Janet. John took great pride in his problem-solving skills, and had an exceptional work ethic, which he instilled in his two sons-Ryan and Scott. He assumed the role of manager at Young Supply in 1992, where he found much pleasure in sharing his knowledge with his younger colleagues, who often sought him out for guidance. As much as John worked hard, he also played hard, enjoying special trips up North snowmobiling with his son Ryan, and supporting son Scott in his sports activities. He dearly loved his annual travel adventures with special sister and brother in law, Eileen and Wally. He shared a special bond with his nephew Griffin. John will be most remembered as a jack-of-all-trades, always having a “remodeling project” in progress. Janet learned great patience with their partially finished home updates, while John helped others complete theirs. John especially enjoyed private conversations with those dear to his heart. He is survived by his wife of 38 years Janet, sons Ryan (Angie) and Scott (Amanda), sister Susan Van Nest, nephew Griffin (LaTanya) Van Nest, sister-in law Eileen (Wally) Godlewski, nephew Mark and niece Allison Godlewski, brother-in-law Todd Murphy, special grandsons Sam and Caleb, and newborn granddaughter Tenley Shay. Friends may visit the family on Thursday from 4-8 PM at Walker Funeral Home 5155 Sylvania Ave (west of Corey Rd). Funeral services will begin with prayers at the funeral home at 9:30 AM Friday followed by Mass of the Resurrection at 10:00 AM at Little Flower Catholic Church. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the ProMedica Toledo Hospital Foundation 2109 Hughes Blvd. Suite 730 Toledo, OH 43606.
