John Tibor Vamos died peacefully on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at the age of 83. Born to his parents, Steve and Elizabeth (Kovacs) Vamos on January 31, 1941, he grew up in the Toledo area and attended Central Catholic High School. He was proud of his Hungarian heritage and family was everything to John.
After high school John enlisted in the United States Army, serving two years, and then enlisted in the United States Air Force and served another 22 years. After his honorable discharge, he became a US Postal Carrier.
While in the service in Alabama, he met his future bride, Anita Dianne Douglas. They were married for 22 years before her passing.
Known for his love of family and food, John combined the two while organizing and serving his extended family during family reunions that grew so big that they had to move them to Pearson Park. Cleveland Guardian baseball and Notre Dame football were close to his heart. He enjoyed cheering for his teams.
John will be forever in the hearts of his family. He talked to his brothers every day, and his greatest joy in life was being palpal to his five great-grandchildren. Carrying on his legacy, daughters, Cynthia (Timothy) Bobak, Teresa Vamos; daughter-in-law, Dawn Vamos; grandchildren, Whitney (Kyle) Robinson, Kelsey (Ashley) Greater, Adam (Sarah) Kay; and Natalie (Tyler) Losh; great-grandchildren, Cooper Greater, Riley Losh, Zoey Losh, Stetson Greater, Faylee Robinson; brothers, Steve Vamos and frank Vamos.
Preceding him in death, wife, Anita Dianne Vamos; parents, Steve Vamos, Elizabeth (Kovacs) Vamos; in-laws, John Douglas, Mary (O'Brien) Douglas; sister, Sr. Hyacynthe Vamos; brother, Rev. Joseph Vamos; son, John L. Vamos; sisters-in-law, Rosemary Vamos and Jean Vamos.
A visitation will be held at the Walker Funeral Home (5155 W. Sylvania Ave.) on Monday, September 16, 2024, from 4 pm – 8 pm, with a rosary recitation beginning at 7 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at 10:30 am, with interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a gift to The American Heart Association can be made in John’s memory.
