John J. Szypka, 89, of Genoa, died late Tuesday evening, May 3, 2011, in Mercy-St. Vincents Medical Center, Toledo. John was born January 19, 1922, in Rossford, Ohio, to Jacob and Anna Zowoski Szypka. On February 11, 1956, in Genoa, Ohio, he married Rozella H. Valko, who preceded him in death December 30, 2001. John retired from Libbey-Owens-Ford Plant 6 in Rossford in 1987 after 28 years working as a box man. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Genoa and the K of C #4237 of Genoa. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII from 1942-1945. One of the things John enjoyed most was being outdoors and working in his yard. John is survived by his sons, Thomas Connie Szypka of Woodville and Andrew Julie Szypka of Curtice, and two grandchildren, Bradley and Shana Szypka. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Rozella, brother, Chester Szypka, and sisters, Mary, Josephine and Pat. Visitation and funeral service will be private. Burial will take place in Clay Township Cemetery, Genoa. Memorials for John may be given to the Allen-Clay Joint Fire Dist. #3 of Genoa. The Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, Genoa, has assisted the family with arrangements.
