John H. Jack Stone was surrounded by his loving family as he passed away on Friday, Oct. 4, in The Toledo Hospital. He was 83. Jack was born in Detroit, Michigan on September 21, 1930 to Vallie and Joseph Stone. The family moved to Ohio in the 1940s. Jack was a 1948 graduate of Holland High School and he attended Ohio State University. In 1950, he married his high school sweetheart, Donna Manley. Donna passed away in 2001. Jack worked as a salesman for Sun Electric, Rogers Furniture City and Ed Schmidt Pontiac before buying Resthaven Manor in 1973 and becoming a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator. In 1985, he built Spring Meadows Extended Care Facility for skilled and long term residents on his familys farmland. He was the administrator until his semi-retirement in 2006. During his years of leadership, he also oversaw the addition of Astor House Assisted Living after which the community was renamed Spring Meadows Senior Community. In 2003, Jack married Barbara Saul who, in addition to being a wonderful and supportive wife also helped him manage the nursing home. Then Jack turned the management of the facility to Phil Witker, whom he thought of as a son. Jack was a member of the Masonic Northern Light Lodge #40. He also served several terms on Holland Council. Jack loved the outdoors and liked to hunt deer and elk with his sons and good friend, Larry Manley. He could repair almost anything with a motor in it and he often was busy at the nursing home doing minor repairs. He was also a very accomplished carpenter who, at age 20, drew the design for he and Donnas first home on a piece of paper and then built it himself using lumber milled from the trees on the property.
