John J. Jack Smith age 87 of Toledo passed away Thursday, January 13, 2011 in Flower Hospital. He was born in Philadelphia PA. on March 11, 1923 to William and Gertrude Smith. After graduating from Bordentown Military Institute he entered the service and served in the 157th Infantry Regiment of the 45th Division in Anzio, Italy during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Upon returning from the military he attended West Virginia University, was a member of Mountain, Senior Mens Honorary and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in 1949. Upon graduation he was employed by Owens Illinois where he spent the next 36 years working in various positions within Human Resources retiring in 1985. Jack was a proud member of Phi Kappa Psi at the University of West Virginia, served on the Board of Directors of Sunset House, a member of Toledo Country Club, and Rockwell Springs Trout Club. He was also a Kentucky Colonel and a founding member of the P.O.E.T.S. Literary Society. Surviving is his wife Doris; daughters Margaret Gay Terry Dwyer and Robin Keith Buckey; and grandchildren Morgan and J.J. Buckey and Michael Dwyer. Friends may visit at the Walker Funeral Home 5155 Sylvania Ave. west of Corey on Tuesday from 10 AM until 12 Noon. Funeral services and burial will be private. A celebration of Jacks life will be held at a later date. The family suggests memorials to Sunset Retirement Community or the Charity of the Donors Choice.
