John Smilo

John Smilo age 73 of Maumee, Ohio passed away in his home surrounded by his loving family. As a High School Teacher, Football Coach and Administrator he touched many lives John Smilo was born in Chicago, Ill August 21, 1934 to Irving and Cleopatra Smilo. His family moved to Dayton, Ohio in 1946. John attended Dayton Fairview High School and excelled on the Football, Basketball, Baseball and Boxing teams earning First Team All-City honors in Football 1953. John attended Manchester College in 1954 where he started on the Football team as a freshman. 1955 was a big year as he enlisted in the United States Army and married the love of his life 51years Angela Mae Fahrer. They spent the first two years of their lives together in Chinon, France where he was stationed and served as a Combat Engineer with the 522 Military Police. He played Quarterback on the base football team and boxed during that time, earning an Honorable Discharge and Good Conduct Medal. In 1958 he enrolled at Findlay College and played Quarterback on the football team. He served as the assistant Offensive and Defensive backfield coach after his playing career was over. He graduated in 1961 and played Quarterback for the Toledo Tornadoes Semi-professional football team in Toledo, Ohio. He accepted his first Teaching and Head Football Coaching job at Wesleyville High School in Erie, Pennsylvania, turning a losing program around by posting winning records in two of his three seasons while teaching US History. In 1965 he moved to Cambridge Springs High School in Cambridge Springs, Pa where he accepted the Head Football Coaching job and taught History.
