John Carl Schaffer

October 12, 1933 — February 2, 2018

John Carl Schaffer, age 84, of Toledo died peacefully on February 2, 2018 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio on Detroit Ave. He was born on October 12, 1933 to Carl and Frances (Curran) Schaffer. John attended Scott High School and graduated from Kentucky Military Institute. He received his Bachelors in Economics from The Ohio State University and received his Masters in Social Work from the University of Michigan. He also received a degree in Education from the University of Toledo. John was committed to the social work profession and was employed at Lucas County Welfare Department in the late 1960s. In the early 1970s he worked for Lucas County Children Services Board. He began teaching at the University of Toledo in 1974. He became the Social Work Department chairperson and was instrumental in the first accreditation of the Social Work Program. As an educator, he had the ability to make students think while building their confidence. He was always available with words of encouragement. He retired in 1992 but later went back to teaching at Lourdes College until officially retiring in 2002. John was a kind, caring and fair Social Work professional. He was known for his wonderful ability to cook and bake. He enjoyed gardening, camping, hiking, fishing and the Detroit Tigers. He was an avid Formula One and Indy car fan, spending many years during May in Indianapolis attending the Indy 500 time trials and races. Ever since he was a young boy, he had a fascination for the circus and regularly attended them. He treasured the many family trips and all the memories that were made. He was a very kind and gentle man that everyone enjoyed being around. Most of all, John will be remembered for being a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, always putting his family first. He is survived by his wife, Rose Mary; son, Peter; daughter, Mary Schaffer and son-in-law, Joshua Hobbs; grandson, Wiley Hobbs; sister, Anne Bartley; sister-in-law, Rubena DerManelian- Schaffer; several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Mark Schaffer. Friends may visit the family on Saturday, February 10, 2018 from 1:00-5:00 PM at Walker Funeral Home 5155 Sylvania Ave (west of Corey Rd) where a celebration of Johns life will take place at 4:00 PM on Saturday. Casual attire, no ties. Memorials may be given to the Toledo Northwest Ohio Food Bank at 24 E. Woodruff Ave. Toledo, OH 43604.
