After two difficult weeks at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, John R. Bergman II of Perrysburg took his last breath on June 22, 2011, at the age of 97. A lifelong Christian, political conservative and American patriot, John was a WW2 veteran who was part of the Normandy invasion and served in five campaigns during the war. He worked as a supervisor at the USPS for many years, and also restored old houses. Dad was always busy working on something: gardening, painting, building glass lamps, learning calligraphy. He was careful and meticulous in all tasks, something he learned at a young age from his family of carpenters. One of his favorite sayings was, Uncle Otto always said nobodys going to ask how long it took to make that. The first thing theyll say is, WHO made that? At the age of 80, he learned to use a computer and frequently exchanged emails with friends around the world. A committed Detroit Tiger fan, Dad never missed a game, even up to the last week of his life. John was preceded in death by his wife Peggy, for whom he alone cared during her long illness; surviving him are his daughter Kathryn and beloved son-in-law Danny Housepian, his two sons John P. Bergman III and William Bergman. Also surviving are three granddaughters Jaime Stiansen, Leigh Housepian, Bekah Amborski and one grandson Major John Michael Bergman IV. He was a dearly loved old soldier who will be missed daily; still we remember gratefully the words of the old hymn, Come unto me, ye weary and I will give you rest. Now all that is left is The Sweeping up the Heart, And putting Love away We shall not want to use again Until Eternity. Family and friends may call at the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home 501 Conant St. Maumee on Friday June 24, 2011 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Interment will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
