John F. Potts, a longtime Toledo attorney, died February 26, 2022, at the age of 69. He was born October 13, 1952, in Stamford, CT to the late John W. and Louise (Viggiano) Potts. Eager to explore beyond his roots, John graduated from Grinnell College (Iowa) in 1974 and the University of Toledo Law School in 1978.
John had a fierce sense of justice and a passion for the law. He lived to work and worked to live. He practiced on his own for 45 years, specializing in criminal law, white collar crime and appellate work.
John loved music and put his skill on the harmonica to use with several local groups including the Post-Modern Blues and The Microphonics. In his youth he was an athlete, wrestling and playing football for his four years at Grinnell. He also enjoyed bicycling and following the Tour de France. Sincere and highly intelligent, John never missed an opportunity to share his opinion and was a willing debater.
Surviving is his brother, Robert Potts, and Robert's wife Patricia; nieces, Shannon Potts, Heather Potts, and her husband Rory Moore; dear friend, Shonda Jones, and her children Elisha Phillips and Edward Phillips.
Friends are invited to visit at Little Flower Catholic Church, 5522 Dorr Street, Toledo, on Saturday, March 5, 2022, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. John will be laid to rest in Connecticut with his parents.
Contributions in his memory are suggested to the Equal Justice Initiative.
