Dr. John J. Jack Ockuly, age 92, passed away June 6, 2012 at Ebeid Hospice in Sylvania. Jack was born March 27, 1920 in Ottoville, OH and was the youngest son of Dr. John F. and Mary Ockuly. He graduated from St. Johns High School in Delphos, OH in 1938. Jack did his undergraduate work at St. Louis University and received his DDS degree in 1946. Upon graduating, he completed an oral surgery residency at what was then Cincinnati General Hospital where he met his wife of 64 years, Jane Walbright. They were married in August, 1947. He then pursued a medical degree, graduating with his M.D. from the University of Louisville in 1951. After completing a rotating internship at the University of Iowa, he entered the US Air Force and served 2 years at Elmendorf AFB in Alaska. Jack returned to University of Iowa and completed his residency in Urology. In 1957 he joined the urology practice of his brothers, Eugene and Edward, and retired in 1985. Jack was on the staff at St. Vincent Medical Center and Toledo Hospital. He belonged to the Toledo Academy of Medicine, Phi Chi Medical Fraternity, Ohio State Medical Association, and Northwest Ohio Urology Association. He was a member of Gesu Church, the Toledo Zoo, the Toledo Art Museum, a lifetime member of Sylvania Country Club, and an honorary member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. Jack will be greatly missed by his wife, Jane; daughters, Sharon Ockuly-Friedrich John of Powell, OH, and Dr. Joan Ockuly Jill Sass of Toledo; son, James Ockuly of Toledo; special nephew, David Ockuly of Defiance; and special daughters, Kathy Williams and Julie Hegeler of New York, NY. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Drs. Eugene, Orville, and Edward Ockuly. Visitation will be Friday, June 8, 2012 from 4-8:00pm at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. west of Corey Rd.. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:00am Saturday at Gesu Catholic Church, 2049 Parkside Blvd. Toledo, OH. Interment will follow at Toledo Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Toledo Area Humane Society, 1920 Indian Wood Circle, Maumee, OH 43537 or the University of Louisville Medical School Foundation Office of University Advancement Louisville, KY 40292.
