John Brian McHugh, age 72, passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026, at home in Maumee, Ohio.
John was born in Detroit, Michigan on December 21, 1953, the first of four boys born to V. Kenneth and Lorraine McHugh. The family moved to Sylvania Township, Ohio, in 1967 and John would attend Sylvania schools through his graduation from Sylvania High School in 1972.
John then, to the utter frustration of his parents, proceeded to move to Sacramento, California. For the next several years, John worked various jobs and attended undergraduate classes, while, as he liked to remind his family at the time, lived life to its fullest. After realizing he needed to stop having fun, John moved back to Toledo and earned both his undergraduate and MBA in Finance from the University of Toledo in 1982.
After graduating, he began his career with Huron, Inc in Lexington, Michigan as their Director of Corporate Development until he left the company in 1993 to join his father in Maumee, together forming Alliance-BRG, Ltd. - a consulting firm specializing in business development, mergers and acquisitions of small to medium sized companies across the U.S. After his father retired 'early' at age 91 in 2017, John would continue to run the business until recently.
John was all about the outdoors, whether rollerblading in the many Toledo Metroparks, hiking much of the Appalachian Trail, attending car races, travelling to warm weather destinations in Florida, the Caribbean and abroad (the only one of the McHugh men who could actually get a tan), visiting his special places on Beaver Island and Port Austin, Michigan or simply spending time with his many close friends and brothers. John was an early progressive, jazz and hard rock fan who attended hundreds of concerts starting in the late 1960's, and his passion for all things automotive, especially Formula 1 and drag racing, sparked his owning many Corvettes and other high-end autos over the years.
John was preceded in death by his parents, V. Kenneth and Lorraine McHugh, and Uncle Tommy McHugh of Livonia, Michigan. He is survived by his brother Jeff (Robin), nieces Megan (Jimmy) Gaydos and great-nephew Judah Peter, Jessica (Chase) Kuzniar and Elizabeth (fiancé Micah DeKraker) McHugh, brother James (Kristina), nephews Cameron (fiancée Piper Sereno) and Austin (Morgan) McHugh, and his Aunt Diane McHugh and her family. Most importantly his youngest brother Bob, who's loving care as his live-in caregiver, chauffeur, chef and brotherly companion made John's last days as comfortable as possible.
Per John's wishes there will be no services or visitation. For all who knew John, raise a glass of good red wine and cheers to a wonderful son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and good friend.
