John F. Martis, 83, of Rossford, Ohio, passed away Sunday, January 23, 2022, at St. Charles Hospital. He was born in Toledo, Ohio, on January 29, 1938, to John and Mary (Kochanski) Martis. He married the love of his life, Rita Fox, and celebrated 61 years of marriage in September.
John served in the U.S. Army. He was an engineer for the railroad and worked for Norfolk Southern for many years. He was a member of the Rossford Eagles, Maumee Elks and volunteered gardening at Helping Hands of St. Louis. He was a longtime member of St. Louis Parish until its closing and then became a member of All Saints Catholic Church. John was always up for a good game of cards, especially Euchre. He loved going to the casino and “making it happen.” Considered by many as “The Copper King,” he spent many hours stripping wire and tearing apart motors. He made Uncle John’s Fishing Lures that were sold in bait stores along Route 2. John enjoyed watching Detroit Tigers baseball games and was an avid bowler, where he bowled for many years at the Toledo Sports Center. Above all, he was a loving husband, father and grandfather. John never missed his grandchildren’s sporting events.
John is survived by his wife, Rita Martis; daughter, Linda (William) Coutcher; son, Ron (Kathie) Martis; grandchildren, Austin Coutcher, Lily Martis, Alexis (Allen) Knapik and Nolan Martis. He was preceded in death by his parents; mother and father-in-law, Henry and Sylvia Fox.
