John L. Lewis

John L. Lewis, age 86, of Toledo, died March 10, 2014 at Ebeid Hospice in Sylvania. He was born July 23, 1927 in Toledo to the late Thomas Lyman and Marie Tody Lewis and married Doris Mae Goodman on August 18, 1949. John was a graduate of DeVilbiss High School and the University of Toledo, earning a Bachelors degree in Engineering. He was employed as a civil engineer with Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Company for more than 40 years. A World War II veteran of the US Army, he also taught weaponry at the US Military Academy at West Point, NY. John was an active member of Collingwood United Methodist Church in Toledo, serving as an usher for many years. He was a genuinely generous and caring man who loved to give himself away to others. He will be fondly remembered for his trips to the Erie Street Market to make change for vendors and for his morning visits to share doughnuts at Bobs Service Station at Upton and Berdan. John also enjoyed following the progress of Toledo-area construction projects, often bearing gifts for the workers. John is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Doris; children, Vicki Rickey Horn, Tommy Kim Lewis and Deborah Lewis; granddaughters, Stacy, Stephanie and Madison; great grandchildren, Sierra and Hunter; and great-great grandchild, Bentley. He was preceded in death by his step-father, William Brownie Brown; brother, George Lewis; sisters, Mable Gray, Jeanne Smith and Phyllis Elberg; and step-brothers, William Smokie, Elwood Woody and Howard Brown. Memorial services to celebrate Johns life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 17, 2014 at Collingwood United Methodist Church, 701 Phillips Ave, Toledo, OH 43612. The Rev. Mary Sullivan will preside. Light refreshments and a gathering of family and friends will immediately follow in the church hall.
