John C. Knurek, 93 of Genoa, died Tuesday morning, July 6, 2010, in Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg. John was born March 10, 1917, in Rossford, Ohio, to Teofil and Sophia Mucha Knurek. On February 27, 1943, in Genoa, Ohio, he married Mary R. Verkin and she preceded him in death May 24, 2009. For 32 years John worked for the former Sealtest Dairy in Toledo and for six years worked at the University of Toledo retiring in 1982. He was a WWII Army veteran serving as an engineer at the Replacement Center. John was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Genoa and had been a long time member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in East Toledo. John is survived by sons, John Medy Knurek of Crescent Hill, IL, and Michael Kathy Knurek of Toledo, daughter, Helen DeCant of Oregon, grandchildren, Annemarie, Tim, Emily and Steve Knurek, Janette Mike OConnor, and Joseph DeCant, great grandchildren, Katheryn Hendricks, Michael OConnor Jr., and Sean OConnor, and sister, Helen Stemen of Perrysburg. His parents, wife and grandson, Benjamin Knurek, preceded him in death. Visitation will be 2:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, July 8, 2010, in the Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory of Genoa. A Rosary service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening. The funeral mass will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 9, 2010, in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Genoa, with interment to follow in Clay Township Cemetery, Genoa. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Genoa American Legion Post #324. The family suggests memorials for John to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church Grotto Fund, Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg, or the donors choice. Johns family would like to thank the Genoa Retirement Village and Hospice of Northwest Ohio for the special care given to John.
