John Edward Kirk

November 28, 1943 — April 3, 2023

John Edward Kirk, 79, of Sylvania, Ohio, passed away peacefully in Lafayette, CO, on April 3, 2023.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Margaret, and younger brothers, William and James. Surviving John are his three children, Kristin Kirk of Colorado (Justin), Jim Kirk of Colorado (Danielle), and Andy Kirk of Rhode Island (Sara); brothers Tom and David; sisters Margaret Kirk and Marianne Merren; and four grandchildren, Izabella, Blaise, Aiden, and Summer.

Born on November 28, 1943 in Toledo, Ohio, John enjoyed a childhood blessed with many good friends at Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH). After graduating from St. Francis de Sales High School in 1961, he received a bachelor of science in business administrations from Xavier University in 1966. John then enjoyed a long career in the insurance and retirement planning business until he retired in 2016.

Nothing brought John greater joy than his role as a father to his three children. He was the picture of support, patience, love, and lessons. He adored the magic of everyday family life, watching his children grow up, making memories and simply sharing quality time together. In 2011, he upgraded to the role of Grandpa, a badge of honor that he wore proudly, which will be forever treasured by his grandchildren.

John was an avid golfer who dedicated much of his time to the sport, even holding the title of Toledo Country Club’s 1970 Club Champion. It was rare to see him without a club in hand, and he was just as happy chipping in the backyard or putting with his kids as he was playing 18 holes.

When he wasn’t on the fairway, John could be found on the basketball court. His love for the game was fun, contagious, and impactful. He selflessly shared his knowledge and passion for the sport, mentoring and inspiring countless players over his more than 40 years of coaching. John had the ability to make anyone who shot hoops with him walk away feeling like a better player and a better person. He was always slow to judge and quick to uplift and inspire, ensuring his coaching extended beyond the court and into daily life. He left a lasting mark on his many players and their parents, and his legacy as a CYO coach (and the many songs he penned for his teams) will echo off the walls of gyms and hearts across Toledo for years to come.

John loved the simple life of small-town Sylvania and Toledo. A cup of hot chocolate from Speedway or an oatmeal breakfast at Mayberry Cafe, followed by a visit to Maumee on Sundays. A favorite church hymn or making up a song of his own. Gathering family around the Thanksgiving table, a big hug from his kids and grandkids, and running into friends.

His unwavering love, kindness, and generosity will forever be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest in peace, John—dad, grandpa, brother, uncle, coach—knowing that your legacy will live on in the hearts of those who love you. Here’s to endless fairways, baskets, and hot chocolates. You will be dearly missed.
