John Thomas Ingersoll

July 14, 1939 — May 10, 2017

John Thomas Ingersoll,77, of Sylvania, Ohio passed away suddenly in his home on May 10, 2017. John was born July 14, 1939 to John F. and Glenn (Pirrung) Ingersoll in Huntington, West Virginia. He married Martha M. Miller on January 23, 1960. Together they raised three daughters: Cynthia, Catherine (Katie) and Laura after making their home in Toledo, Ohio. John graduated from Marshall University in 1962 and served in the US Army before beginning his 25-year career with Owens Illinois in 1964. He was proud of his service as a Presidential Exchange Executive at the Department of Housing & Urban Development in Washington DC during 1971-72 and led Toledo Area Government Research Association studies in the 1980s. John shared his leadership skills by faithfully serving his church, most recently as Chairman of the Trustees of Epworth UMC from 2010-2015. A model train enthusiast, John regularly invited friends and neighbors to spend time “playing trains” with him. He was also a dog lover, spoiling family and neighborhood pets with treats carried in his pockets. His family was of utmost importance to him and he meticulously planned trips to spend time with his extended family including his grandchildren and new great-granddaughter. John is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Martha Ingersoll; daughters, Cynthia (Tom) Schwallie, Katie Ingersoll and Laura Ingersoll; grandchildren, Sarah (Joel) Minnich and John Schwallie; great-granddaughter, Georgia Minnich; his brother, William (Roberta) Ingersoll; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will take place at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Avenue from 2 until 4p.m. and 6 until 8 p.m. on Friday, May 12, 2017. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday in the funeral home. Interment will follow at Toledo Memorial Park. John often spoke of the good work Heroes in Action was doing in Toledo. In lieu of flowers please consider donations to either Heroes in Action or Epworth United Methodist Church. Online condolences may be placed at walkerfuneralhomes.com
