John Howard Francis Ickes

John Howard Francis Ickes was born on November 1, 1958 at St. Vincent Hospital in Toledo Ohio. He was one of four children born from the union of William Howard and Elizabeth Anne (Zimmerman) Ickes. John attended Start High School, where he graduated with the class of 1976. On June 28, 1986, John married the former Sheryl Coon and from this union came the birth of a daughter: Erica. He worked hard to support his family, most recently working as a maintenance man for BK Property Services Inc where he worked for sixteen years, taking retirement in 2014. John had a love of Black Labradors since he was a young boy having one as a companion for most of his life. He enjoyed grilling whenever the weather was right. He took his family on numerous camping trips through the years enjoying the great outdoors. John and his brother Mark were inseparable, they were often found fishing in Lake Erie and even the pond at the apartment complex. John Howard Francis Ickes, age 60 of Toledo, passed away at 3:30am on Wednesday, September 18, 2019 with his loving family by his side. In addition to his parents, John was preceded by his brothers: Gary Ickes and Mark Ickes. To cherish his memory, John leaves his only daughter: Erica Ickes of Toledo; sister: Lisbeth “Beth” (Jim) Rakestraw of Toledo; nieces and nephew: Jenny (Brandon) Bauman of Sylvania, Katie Gullufsen of Toledo, Doug Gullufsen of Toledo, Kristen Brown of Wyandotte and Melissa (Matthew) Oddo of Lambertville; and sister in law: Lisa Ickes of Toledo. Friends may gather from 2:00pm to 6:00pm on Monday, September 23, 2019 at Neville-Shank Funeral Home, 7438 Airport Highway, Holland. A celebration of his life will follow at 6:00pm also at Neville – Shank with Pastor Roy Southerland officiating. Memorials can be made to the wishes of the family.
