John C. Hodak, 67, of Perrysburg, passed away Friday, September 13, 2019 in Columbus, Ohio. John was born May 30, 1952 in Toledo, Ohio to George J. and Mary (Stack) Hodak. Growing up, John spent much of his time participating in Friendly Center programs and learned to swim at Camp Friendly. Serving as an altar boy, John participated in daily mass at St. Francis de Sales Chapel. John graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1970 where he was affectionately known as “Hawk.” An avid basketball player, his favorite position to play was point guard. He was a member of Toledo University’s 1971-1972 Mid-American Conference Championship Team which also won the 1971 Michigan Invitational. John graduated from Toledo University in 1974. John taught for 37.69 years until retiring in 2013. After a brief stint at Stautzenberger College, John taught at Fayette Schools and served as the varsity basketball coach for three years. He then spent the remainder of his career teaching social studies at Perrysburg Junior High. John spent many years coaching 7th grade boys’ basketball and 8th grade girls’ basketball at Perrysburg. He was head varsity boys’ basketball coach at Maumee Valley Country Day School and assistant coach at Northwood High School. Additionally, he enjoyed coaching track & field and cross county for Perrysburg Junior High. For many summers with hardly a day off, John worked at Bowers Asphalt and Paving. Self-taught, he worked on many car repair and home improvement projects both at home and helping his children. Recently he spent weeks preparing his daughter’s home for sale in Columbus. On June 29th, John celebrated 45 years of marriage with Bonnie whom he started dating as a teenager. John enjoyed visits to his sons in Denver and Cincinnati, a recent trip to England, and frequent visits to Columbus to spend time with his daughter, son, and grandchildren whom, along with his children, he adored. John relished spending time with his family, making masterful pies, growing fruit trees, vegetable gardening, and attending Ohio State basketball and football games. He especially enjoyed spending time with his three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his grandmothers Meri Hodak and Clara Stack, his parents Mary and George, and brother Dennis. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 45 years, Bonnie (Balduf); siblings Bob (Lynn) Hodak, George (Julie) Hodak, Mary Ann (Denny) Rose; brothers-in-law John (Linda) Balduf, Corky (Karen) Balduf; his children Kerry (Richard Arnold), Alex, Adam (Amber Fagan), and Matt (fiancé Stella Burger) Hodak; grandchildren John Robert, Katherine Elizabeth, and Victoria Marie Arnold; nieces and nephews; and grand-nieces and nephews.He took great joy in spending time with his family whom he loved dearly. John will be profoundly missed by his family and friends. Friends will be received Friday, September 27, 2019 from 5-7 p.m. at Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, 222 E. South Boundary Street, Perrysburg (419-874-3133). A Celebration of John’s life will be held Saturday, September 28, 2019 at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 2770 W. Central Ave, Toledo, Ohio 43606. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church.
