Dr. John J. Hannan, 83, passed away on February 22, 2012 at home. John was born on September 2, 1928 in Luckey, Ohio to Millard and Beatrice (Bringman) Hannan. John attended Troy-Luckey High School where he loved playing basketball. During his high school career, Coach Doyce Filiere, lead them to become high school basketball champions in their county and district. “The Chief” was drafted into the Army (1950-1952) and stationed in Cape Cod as a Military Police Officer. On July 14, 1956, John married the love of his life, Shirley Hagg. John was a proud graduate of The Ohio State University where he served as senior class president of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Upon graduation, John and Shirley purchased the Toledo Veterinary Clinic in 1960. In addition to his downtown office, John was also a track Vet at Raceway Park and serviced the horses for the Toledo Police. He then expanded his practice to the Sylvania area with the creation of Holly Farms Animal Care Center on Bancroft and McCord (1983). For 44 years, Dr. John Hannan skillfully cared for puppies, kittens, pure-breds and “junkyard dogs” with great compassion and love. Doc was a 51 year member of St. Petri Evangelical Lutheran Church and a Toledo Rotarian for many years and enjoyed organizing their golfing events. He was an active man and spent many mornings at the St. Luke’s rehab center. St. Luke’s offered more than just a place to exercise, he developed many cherished friends. After his retirement, John also spent time enjoying the shores of Lake Erie. While a successful businessman, his greatest joy was his family. John and Shirley were married for 55 wonderful years. His dedication to his wife, “Shirl” was legendary and one to be admired. It is our belief that there wouldn’t be any other person who loved his children and grandchildren as much as he did. He is father to Pam Hannan-Hedges (John), Andrea Ravelli (George), Jay Hannan (Amy), Jayme Bottke (Todd) and grandfather to ten fantastic grandchildren: Anthony, Hannah, Emilee and Georgie Ravelli, Tess, J. Rogan and Keegan Hannan, Kennedy and Blake Hedges and Fletcher Bottke. Also surviving are his wife, Shirley Hannan; sister, Carol Volschow; and brothers-in-law, Earl Hagg and Joe Overmyer.
