John W. Grzegorzewski

September 4, 1933 — November 3, 2021

John W. Grzegorzewski age 88 of Maumee, Ohio passed away on Wednesday, November 3, 2021. He was born in Swanton, OH on September 4, 1933, to Valentine and Elizabeth H. (Kecskes) Grzegorzewski. John grew up in Swanton and accomplished a great deal as a young man. In high school, he was the editor of the Trail Blazer yearbook, a member of the Glee Club and student council, participated in school plays, was a delegate to Buckeye Boys State, acted as the student manager of both the Basketball and Baseball teams, was a four-year Football player, and was president of the Varsity Club. During his high school football career, the Blade named him on their first team all-Maumee Valley League Football team and Oak Harbor selected him for their All-Opponent Squad. One of his most notable and significant accomplishments occurred his senior year when Monclova, Waterville, and Whitehouse Schools were in the process of consolidating into what would eventually become Anthony Wayne Schools. John designed and created their new Anthony Wayne monogram that was used for years as their Varsity Letter. After high school, John attended Bowling Green State University where he played football for two years before taking time off to start a career at the Libbey-Owens-Ford Company (LOF) and a family with his wife, Rena whom he met while attending school. He began his career as a laborer at LOF in 1953 and eventually worked his way up to Superintendent before retiring after 40 years in 1993. During his time at LOF, and with the support of his loving wife, John went back to school and eventually graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education and spent several years teaching part-time. In his free time, John enjoyed gardening, creating stained glass artwork, chair caning, making tin soldiers, traveling, and spending time with his family. In his later years, he took great pleasure in finding the best deals at the local supermarket and harassing each and every telemarketer that called his house. Surviving is his son, John C. (Sandy) Grzegorzewski; daughters, Jo Beth VanTress and Jennifer Iwinski; grandsons, Adam (Laura) VanTress and Jeremy (Lauren) VanTress; great-grandchildren, Nora, Henry, Alice, and Evan VanTress and brother Fred Grzegorzewski. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Rena M. Grzegorzewski, and brother, Andrew. Services for John will be private at Highland Memory Gardens, Waterville, OH. Arrangements by Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, Maumee. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your local Humane Society. Online condolences may be shared at walkerfuneralhomes.com
