John Spencer Gilchrist

John Spencer Gilchrist, a proud Buckeye, age 79 of Sylvania passed away Monday, July 31, 2017 in Ebeid Hospice Residence. He was born April 30, 1938 in Toledo to Frederick and Sarah Jeannette Gilchrist. Spencer earned his Bachelor of Education degree from Ohio State University and his Masters in Education from the University of Toledo. He was a teacher, assistant principal and a football coach at Delta High School before his retirement. He was an active and highly decorated member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Toledo Flotilla 16-13. Spencer shared his many skills, talents and wisdom with his shipmates. A unique soul, Unk was an avid boater and fisherman. His joyous laugh will be remembered by all that knew him. Spencer is survived by his brother Charles (Greta) Gilchrist; first cousin, Vicky Gilchrist; and many nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey) on Friday at 12 Noon where funeral services will follow at 1 PM. Interment Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
