John was a graduate of Port Clinton High School, Class of 1969. On December 7, 1974, he married Susan Jean Guendelsberger, who preceded him in death on December 14, 2015.

John began working at Lake Erie Sporting Goods while still in high school. In his retirement he worked as a groundskeeper at Schedel Arboretum and Gardens in Elmore, Ohio. Known for his wide range of skills, John truly embodied the role of a "jack of all trades."

In his younger years, John enjoyed playing softball with friends and family with The Port Clinton Softball League, playing for Mon Ami, and winning many tournaments. He spent numerous hours playing volleyball with the Port Clinton Men's Volleyball Leage, scoring many points under the nickname "Catnip". In that time John also became a teacher of the practice ushering many students to success.

John had a deep love for the wild beauty and natural habitats of our region. He spent many a day in the duck blind with his Father, Grandfather and family on Magee Marsh. Later in his years his focus shifted to conservation and preservation. He had once expressed the dream of becoming a veterinarian, and so it follows throughout his life he loved and cared for all the animals that came into his care, especially his much-beloved dogs and cats.

Music was another of John's lifelong interests, spending many years attempting to master the guitar. His Smoke on the Water was simply the best. He was a beloved regular at Bell Mell Tavern & Pizza as well as The Gristmill, where he was considered family by all, and where he formed many lasting friendships. John never met a stranger he didn't like and had a gift for gab and a profound ear for listening, always making others feel seen and welcome. John was a forever son of Port Clinton, OH.
