John Robert Eckhart, Iii

October 10, 1948 — September 25, 2022

John Robert Eckhart of Maumee passed away Sunday September 25th after a long battle with cancer. John was born to John and Terry (Pemberten) in Toledo on October 10th,1948. John attended Woodward High School before being drafted into the Army to serve in the Vietnam War. John was severely injured while proudly serving his country and received the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal before being honorably discharged from service in April 1969.


John was an avid golfer and spent many hours on local courses and loved to spend a round of golf with family or friends. John’s love of golf was second only to his commitment to help other Veterans. During his twenty plus year career, John worked for Jobs and Family Services of both Ohio and Florida and helped countless veterans find employment and better their lives. John’s love for his country extended beyond his active duty service as he spent countless hours connecting local employers to veterans helping to create lifelong partnerships. John was also an active member of St. Pats of Heatherdowns church and the Knights of Columbus.


John was preceded in death by his parents John and Terry, his sister Cheryl Eckhart, brother Mark Eckhart (Gloria) and brother in law Tom Forthome (Darnell). John is survived by his wife Maryann (Forthome), his son Andrew (Lauree), step son Michael (Jennifer) Christopher, step daughter Bethann (Sandy) Rogers, step son Tommy (Trina) Christopher, brother Jim, sister Darlene, brother-in-law Joe (Slyvia) Forthome, sister-in-law Pat Forthome and sister-in-law Kathy Campbell (Forthome). John was blessed with eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.


There will be a service at St. Pat’s of Heatherdowns on Monday October 3rd at 10:00 am, with a luncheon to follow immediately. John will be interred at St Joe’s Cemetery in a private service. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to Honor Flight (honorflight.org) in John’s name. Maison-Dardenne-Walker has assisted the family and condolences may be shared with the family at walkerfuneralhomes.com
