John Emory Buckey, age 70, of Toledo, died unexpectedly January 1, 2023. He was born May 29, 1952, in Lakewood, OH to Warren and Mary Janet (Garlough) Buckey. John graduated from Ottawa Hills High School (1970) and Duke University (1974), where he was a varsity tennis player at both schools. As a CPA, he earned his law degree from Emory University. John had a strong entrepreneurial spirit, combining legal and accounting skills in real estate development, and later, as a business leader, officer, and counsel across a broad corporate spectrum.
John loved Duke basketball, Ohio State football, and the Detroit Tigers. He was a fantasy sports enthusiast, enjoying old rock and roll bands, movies and stand-up comedy. He was known for his quick, dry wit. Generous and loyal, John’s unique gift for personal connection made him a cherished friend, compassionate counselor, and trusted mediator. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends, especially at Epworth Heights on Lake Michigan.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Amy (Schwartz) Buckey; children, Brian, Kate, and Laura Buckey; mother, Mary Janet Buckey; siblings, Janice Cain (Kelly), Keith Buckey (Robin), Jay Buckey (Carolyn), and Scott Buckey (Laura); and numerous nieces and nephews. His father, Warren Emory Buckey, preceded him in death.
