John Layton Bradley

Mr. John L. Bradley, of Springfield Township, Ohio, died at his home on Friday, June 26, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born June 5, 1928 to Mont and Frances (Messersmith) Bradley of Champaign, IL. Mr. Bradley graduated from the University of Illinois in 1950, and then served in the United States Air Force for two years. Mr. Bradley retired as Senior Vice President of Sheller Globe. During a career which spanned over 30 years, he negotiated labor contracts for his company and mediated local Toledo labor disputes as a volunteer for the Labor Management Citizens Committee. Mr. Bradley was a supporter of Junior Achievement and the Toledo Zoological Society for which he served as a trustee, including two terms as President. Mr. Bradley was an avid reader, and devoted fan of the Fighting Illini and the Detroit Tigers. Mr. Bradley is survived by his wife of 35 years, Ellen June Bradley also of Springfield Township. Also surviving is son John Layton Bradley, Jr. (Lisa) of Raleigh, NC and three grandchildren: John III (“Jack”) of Atlanta, GA; Elisabeth of Raleigh, NC; and David of Watertown, NY. Mr. Bradley’s stepdaughters are Shelley Halfpap (Kenny) of New Albany, OH and granddaughter Kathryn; Cynthia Wagner (Michael) of Westerville, OH and grandson Luke; and Jill Niehoff (Steven) of Skillman, NJ and twin grandchildren Julia and Andrew. Mr. Bradley is survived by several nieces and nephews, and was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sarah Barham. Mr. Bradley was formerly married to Frances Haupt (“Hope”) Bradley. Funeral services will be Friday, July 3, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the Maumee United Methodist Church, with the Reverend Joanie Schilling officiating. The family will receive friends in the church narthex one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in Mr. Bradley’s memory to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, 30000 E. River Road, Perrysburg, Ohio 43551 or the Toledo Zoological Society, 2700 Broadway Street, Toledo, Ohio 43614. The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice of Northwest Ohio and Home Instead for their kind support and care during John’s transition.
