John Stuart Battle

April 12, 1924 — December 18, 2008

John Stuart Battle, 84, of Catawba Island, passed away Thursday, December 18, 2008 from complications resulting from a fall at his home in late November. John was born on April 12, 1924 in Leicester, England where he lived until his early 30s. In 1955 he brought from England his wife, his 3 daughters and his dog to live in Plymouth, Michigan. He was an automotive engineer employed by General Motors when he was transferred to Sandusky. He built a home on Catawba Island and has resided there since 1969. He was an active member of the Catawba Island Club where he served as trustee for many years. He enjoyed playing golf with his friends, the doozy dozen as well as regular Friday night dinners at restaurants around town. His friends and family will remember his great hospitality when he hosted parties on fireworks nights and holidays . The family is grateful for the wonderful care given by Ryan Lesniewicz during his final years and the special friendship shown by Nancy and Emil Ihnat. Survivors include: Daughters: Kathleen Porter William of Amelia Island, Florida and Barbara Wykes Joseph of Brighton, MI; Grandchildren: Kristen, Jillian, Heather, William and Allison and 6 Great Grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Peggy in December 2005, by his daughter Jacqueline Upton in 2002, and his grandson Robert in 1990. A private family memorial is planned at a later date. The family wishes to thank Mr. Battles great friends for their wonderful support throughout the years.
