Johanna Waardenburg, age 97, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2014 in Toledo, Ohio. Johanna was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands June 5, 1916 and was married to the late Schalk J. Waardenburg for over 60 years. In the early 1940s her home in Rotterdam was bombed by the Nazis and she narrowly escaped with her two small children and the clothes on her back. In 1955, she and her husband left Holland with their 6 children to start a new life in Vista, California. She always had a youthful spirit and would laugh until tears were streaming down her face. She had a passion for dancing, played the organ, loved her cats, and knew the value of a good cup of coffee. Johanna was preceded in death by her husband and daughter, Johanna Russ Gish. She is survived by her children, Schalk Waardenburg, Jr., Robert Pat Waardenburg, Tina Don Winfrey, Rudy Susan Waardenburg, and Hans Waardenburg; 17 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank Hospice of Northwest Ohio for all of their care and compassion. A memorial to celebrate her life will be held privately.
