Joe Michael Church, 66, passed away on February 5, 2026. Born July 13, 1959, Joe lived a life full of music, motion, laughter, and connection, which he made look effortless.
Joe graduated from Napoleon High School, where his athletic talent was impossible to miss. He competed on the varsity track and field and basketball teams and still holds the school record for pole vaulting, a fun fact he wore lightly, but one that says a lot about his drive. He was also a lifeguard during his high school years, already showing the confidence and calm that would define him throughout life.
Staying active was just Joe being Joe. He loved skiing and golf, and one of his greatest joys was teaching family members. He was always patient, encouraging, and never taking himself too seriously. He coached his sons in motocross, cheering loudly, supporting fiercely, and loving every minute of it. True to his personality, Joe rooted for the underdog, remaining loyal to the Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Cavaliers through thick and thin.
Joe was endlessly creative. He loved tackling home projects with his wife, Jamie, especially when it came to making over-the-top Halloween decorations. Music was another constant in his life. Joe played guitar in several bands over the years with Jamie and his brother John, writing a lot of his own music. In his younger days, he even toured in New York with his band, chasing the joy of live music and the stories that came with it.
He owned the Easy Street Café in downtown Toledo and later worked in sales at Yark Automotive, where his easygoing nature, dry quick wit, and genuine interest in people made him someone customers remembered and liked.
Above all, Joe was known for his humor, humility, and kindness. He made friends easily, left people smiling, and had a way of making every interaction better just by being himself. He adored his dogs, Baker and Wally, and considered them family.
Family and friends may gather at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave, on Thursday, February 12, 2026, from 4-7 pm. At 7 pm there will be an "Open Mic" for sharing stories, memories and music.
