Joanne Marie Chovanec Cornell

Joanne Marie (Chovanec) Cornell was born in Clay Center, Ohio, to George and Anna (Koschak) Chovanec on September 8, 1938. She passed away on October 20, 2015, with her loving family by her side. Joanne was 77. On October 18, 1958, she married her high school sweetheart, Robert Cornell, and he survives. Joanne was a 1956 graduate of Genoa Area High School, where she was a member of the GAA, Chorus and FBLA. She worked as a secretary for Toledo Edison, leaving to become a mother, and then worked as a secretary at Allen Central Elementary School for 20 years. She enjoyed her Bunco Club, Bel Ami Club and the many casinos she went to with Bob and friends. Joanne sang in the church choir and taught catechism for many years. Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, son, Robert, Jr., brothers, George (Leona), Peter, and sister, Mary (Paul) Feyes. She is survived by her husband, daughter, Melissa (John) Bowlander, son, Justin (Connie) Cornell, grandson, John Bowlander, Jr., granddaughters, Alexandria Bowlander and Genevieve Cornell, step grandsons, Michael and Patrick OBryan, step granddaughter, Tiffany Frye, sister, Veronica (Norman) Heilman, brother-in-law, James (Charlotte) Cornell, and many nieces and nephews. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Genoa, at 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 26, 2015. The burial will be private. The family would like to thank the wonderful staffs at Orchard Villa Nursing Home and the Genoa Care Center for their care of our Joanne. A special thank-you goes to all the wonderful doctors, nurses, aides, and one special dietary member at Mercy-St. Charles Hospital ICU, who treated Joanne like she was their mother. Memorials for Joanne may be made to the Grotto Fund at Our Lady of Lourdes, 204 Main St., Genoa, OH 43430; or the Allen-Clay Joint Fire Dist. #2, 3155 N. Genoa Clay Center Rd., Genoa, OH 43430. Robinson-Walker Funeral Home Crematory of Genoa has assisted the family with arrangements.
