Joan Elizabeth Schafer

July 28, 1944 — January 8, 2026

Joan Elizabeth Schafer (née Snyder), lovingly known as Joni, Mom, Grandma, Aunt Noni, and GiGi, age 81, passed away in Toledo, Ohio on January 8, 2026.

Joni was born on July 28, 1944, in Port Clinton, Ohio, to Ralph and Carlista Snyder, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her sister Marlo Keller, brother-in-law Phil Keller, and former husband Tom Schafer (Fran and William). Joan lived much of her life in Toledo and Waterville, Ohio, places she proudly called home.

She is survived by her beloved children Carol (Craig) and Tom (Darlene); her cherished grandchildren Samantha, Tommy, Ben, Nathan, Adam, Jonathan, and Harry; and her soon to arrive great-grandson, Henry Thomas, whose coming brought her great joy. She is also survived by her sister Sally (Jim) Brabham. She is also loved and remembered by many nieces and nephews as well as her lifelong friend, Gene Heinzerling.

Joni was a proud graduate of Port Clinton High School, where she was active on the debate team, and later The Ohio State University, where she was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. She devoted more than 45 years to her profession as an Occupational Therapist, specializing in hand and upper extremity therapy work she approached with skill, compassion, and deep dedication to her patients.

An avid golfer, Joni also loved games of all kinds, especially bridge, Monopoly, and bowling. She enjoyed traveling, cheering on University of Toledo sports, attending her grandchildren's sporting events and activities, and spending time at the symphony and theater. She was an artist and a lifelong learner, always curious and engaged with the world around her.

Above all else, Joni's family and friends were the center of her life, and her presence was the spark of the room and brought warmth, comfort, and smiles to everyone around her.
