Joan Marie (Lutkin) Peters, wife of Richard Charles Peters, (deceased), passed away peacefully at Otterbein Sunset Village on Wednesday, July 26, 2023. Born October 3, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois, Joan was an identical twin to Jane (Lutkin) Peters. No one expected the 2lb and 4lb twins to survive infancy – but the little ones beat all the odds.
Only weeks after their first date to her Senior Prom, Dick knew he wanted to marry the little 5’2” sweetie. The following summer they were married and celebrated 55 years together before Dick’s passing in 2011. She is survived by four daughters, Jane Ellen Reilly (David), Judith Lynn Bryson (Steven), Joan Marie Peters, and Jennifer Joy Sharpe, 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren with 1 on the way. The early years of raising the girls were blessed with strong family bonds. Joan’s twin, Jane (Tiny) Peters, married Dick’s cousin, Bob Peters, and Tiny and Bob’s family also grew with the addition of 4 daughters. The couples bought homes across the street from each other in the quiet little town of Carpentersville, Illinois. Those happy years were also filled with the best of neighbors who remained their close friends even after life moved them all on from Carpentersville.
In 1980 Joan and Dick moved from Illinois to Toledo. Ohio became their home and opened up many new friends and experiences. At 50 years old Joan moved from full time homemaker to full time employee of Medical Mutual Insurance Company. She thoroughly enjoyed learning new skills and making new friends and stayed there for 20 years. During these years Joan and Dick enjoyed travelling with their dear friends, but always made time to help and support their growing family of grandchildren and great grandchildren, whom they cherished. Holiday meals were delicious and fun at Grandma and Grandpa’s. Nothing brought them more joy than celebrating the accomplishments and milestones of loved ones.
Joan loved gardening, sewing, and home decorating. She was a gifted seamstress. There wasn’t a creative project she wouldn’t tackle to beautify to her home. There wasn’t a dress she couldn’t make, including bridesmaids and wedding dresses for the girls.
Joan and Dick were Christians and active in various churches in Illinois and Ohio. After Dick passed Joan spoke often of her desire to be in heaven with her Savior Jesus Christ and to be reunited with her beloved husband.
A Celebration of Life for Joan will be held at the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant St., Maumee on Sunday, July 30, 2023, at 2 PM. Memorial contribution may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
