Joan E. Hoffar, a.k.a Joanie Shores age 66 of Sylvania passed away Sunday, November 25, 2018 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio Inpatient Care in Toledo. She was born November 27, 1951 in Charleroi, PA to Louis and Betty (Wyatt) Vavasori. She was raised by her late uncle and aunt Alfred and Mary Nonni Mucci in Hollywood, Florida. A 1969 graduate of S. Broward High School she went to work for WGMA radio in Hollywood where she met her future husband Gary. The couple moved to Toledo in 1975 where they married and began their family and her career in Toledo. She began at Channel 24, then Don Lea Advertising. After leaving Don Lea she went to work at the former Tailford Cooper Advertising, now known as Cooper Smith for over 25 years, retiring as Executive Vice President in 2016. After her initial diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer 5 years ago, she became a mentor for other women going through the same cancer battle. Her cancer returned and was discovered in her liver just 3 weeks ago. She was the biggest animal lover in the world and enjoyed going to car shows with her husband, Gary. She was very proud of her family and enjoyed being with them. She loved spending time with friends and loved the water and the Florida sun. Preceded in death by her mother, aunt and uncle and brother Louis Vavasori, Jr., she is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Gary Shores Hoffar; children Julie (Daniel) Garwatoski, Garrett (Ashley) Hoffar and Alan Hoffar; father Louis Vavasori, Sr.; and was excited to be a Nonni of 8 weeks to grandson Noah Patrick Hoffar; also surviving is her niece Angela Vavasori; and last but not least, her beloved dog Crash. Friends are invited to share a celebration of her life with the family at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey) on Sunday, December 2, 2018 from 11 am to 5 pm.
