Joan Haigh

October 1, 1931 — May 23, 2025

Joan DuBois Haigh passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on May 23, 2025, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg, Ohio. Born in Toledo, Ohio, on October 1, 1931, to the late Lida and Durwood DuBois, Joan lived a life rich in love, faith, friendship, service, and quiet strength.

Joan was a devoted wife to George Haigh, whom she met in Toledo and dated while she attended Smith College and he attended Dartmouth. They married in New Jersey and began a lifelong journey together, living in France during George’s Army service, and later in Mexico City and São Paulo, Brazil, during his career with the Devilbiss Corporation. George preceded her in death in 2006.

Joan was the epitome of grace and generosity as a mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, and friend. She served her community with distinction, holding leadership roles with the Junior League (President 1967 - 69), Family Services (President 1977 - 78), and the Toledo American Red Cross chapter. She was a staunch supporter of the Toledo Museum of Art. Her sharp mind and quick wit often surfaced during family Wordle competitions, where she was, more often than not, the reigning champion.

She was the salutatorian of Ottawa Hills High School and a proud graduate of Smith College. Her friendships were deep and lasting, especially with “the Girlies,” seven lifelong friends from Ottawa Hills.

Joan was a voracious reader, a wise listener, and a woman who offered steady guidance and support to those around her. She loved fly fishing with her husband, George, and her son Steve, and was the longest-living member of Rockwell Springs Trout Club and the Toledo Country Club.

She is survived by her children Connie (Mike) Gibbons and Steve (Marge) Haigh, her grandchildren Peter (Kim) Haigh and their children, Landon and Laila, Susan Haigh, and Grace (Nick) Burris. She is also survived by her beloved sister, Connie McMillian.

A private family service will be held in her honor. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Toledo Museum of Art or Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Walker Funeral Homes, Toledo, OH, is assisting in the arrangements. The family is forever grateful to Sue Brooks for her friendship and care for both Joan and George in their later years.
