Joan B. Chapman of Sylvania, Ohio passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 29 at Flower Hospital. Joan had been a resident at Sunset Village Retirement Home since August, 2005. Joan was born in Toledo, Ohio to John and Elizabeth Zellin Brown. She was a graduate of the former Waterville High School. Joan pursued her education at Bowling Green State University and graduated with degrees in elementary education and music. Following graduation from BGSU in 1942, Joan attended the distinguished Julliard Institute of Music in New York City. She married Dale L. Richard in January, 1946. Joan taught for three years in the Anthony Wayne School District and 31 years for Washington Local, teaching both music and elementary education. She retired in 1985. During retirement she worked as a volunteer at the Flower Hospital Gift Shop. Joan taught voice lessons during her career and was involved for many years with the Waterville Playshop. She was also the contralto soloist at the First Untitarian Church on Collingwood Avenue. Joan also sang with the Monday Musicale vocal group. Early in her career, Joan sang opera at the Peristyle and was the only local member of the cast of Charlies Aunt when the New York stage company performed at the Toledo Zoo Amphitheatre. Joan also appeared in several TV commercials, most recently in a TV spot for Sunset Village. Joan was preceded in death by her husband C. Warren Chapman in 1977. Joan is survived by her loving family-daughters Nancy Jim Shaw, Holly Schmidbauer and son, Bob Chapman. She is also survived by grandchildren, Richard Andrea Schmidbauer, Robert Rene Schmidbauer, Kytari Chapman and Jimmy Joanna Shaw; great grandchildren Athena Yuhas Schmidbauer, Vaughn Schmidbauer, Mckenna Schmidbauer, Adam Schmidbauer, Andrew Schmidbauer and Lillie Marie Shaw. Friends may call at the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home 501 Conant St., Maumee on Friday, May 30, 2008 from 3-8 pm. Funeral services on Saturday will be private. The family wishes to thank Joans close caregiver and pal, Sharon Miller and all of the wonderful caregivers at Sunset Village who took such special care of her. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Community of Christ Lutheran Churchs pipe organ fund, 6517 Finzel Road, Whitehouse, OH 43571.
