Joan Baumann

November 18, 1926 — October 2, 2014

Joan L. Baumann went peacefully to be with the Lord while surrounded by her beloved family on October 2, 2014. Joan was born on November 18, 1926 to Andrew and Mabel Voigt in Appleton, Wisconsin, moved to Milwaukee with her parents and graduated from Juneau High School. She attended and graduated from a secretarial school in Milwaukee that led her to a position in the Law School at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in that capacity. She regularly attended a Koinonia fellowship group at Calvary Lutheran Chapel in Madison where she met her future husband Reemt Baumann who then was a graduate school student enrolled in the UW School of Education. They spent the greater part of their lives in Toledo, Ohio and recently celebrated their 55th anniversary. She was blessed with three loving daughters, Cynthia (Neil) Nutter, Kari (Dan) Kenna, and Amy Baumann and she treasured nine wonderful grandchildren, Alison, Emily, Susan and Rachel Nutter; Sean, Ryan, Jamie, and Taylor Kenna; and Erika Baumann. They and her husband Reemt survive. Joan was a member of Olivet Lutheran Church and served on the Altar Guild and Welcome Team Ministries. Previously she was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church and served on the Evangelism Ministry and Church Council and occasionally taught Sunday school. “Miss Joan” was a Nursery School teacher at Memorial Lutheran Preschool, a Brownie leader and a Girl Scout leader at Lincolnshire Elementary School. She also worked for many years in the Registrar’s Office at the University of Toledo helping students schedule their classes. She loved life and people. Summer vacations with her family often involved camping experiences, first of all with a tent and later with a trailer. Among the locations visited were Washington D.C., Colorado, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Michigan, Canada, and nearby parks including a favorite Pokagon State Park in Indiana. The Lakeside Chautauqua also was a familiar destination especially the week that included the Fourth of July fireworks. She was an avid bridge player and one of her favorite afternoons would be lunch and bridge with her friends. She and her husband also belonged to several bridge couples’ groups that provided long-term friendships with one group playing together monthly for thirty years. With her husband they were loyal fans of the University of Toledo football and basketball teams and occasionally enjoyed returning to Madison in the fall to cheer for Wisconsin with other local Badger fans. Her memo to you is “Remember me with joy and laughter because that is how I will remember you.” The celebration of her life funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 18, at 11:00 a.m. at Olivet Lutheran Church located on 5840 Monroe Street, Sylvania, Ohio. The family will meet friends starting at 9:30 a.m. After the service, family members will place her ashes in the Garden of Peace. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made in the form of gifts to Olivet Lutheran Church, Hospice of Northwest Ohio, or another charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements by the Walker Funeral Home. Online condolences may be shared with the family at walkerfuneralhomes.com
